Garage Door Panel Replacement

You misjudged the last metre of the driveway and felt the bumper meet the door. The bottom section now carries a crease across most of its width.

In plain words

Everything about a section replacement flows from knowing exactly which door you have. Two doors that look alike from the driveway can differ in section height, thickness, the shape of the joint where sections meet, where the hinges bolt on and how the skin is embossed. A new section has to share all of those details to seat cleanly against its neighbours. So the visit starts with a hunt for the manufacturer's label, usually on the edge of a section or on the track, followed by measurements and photographs. With that identity confirmed, the right section can be ordered with confidence rather than hope.

Sound familiar?Rosemount

The call
Rust has crept along the bottom edge of the lowest section. What began as bubbling paint is now a soft, flaking strip, the seal retainer is working loose, and a screwdriver pressed against the worst spot goes through the steel.

How the visit goes

Illustrative garage doors scene — Rosemount
  1. Scene 1

    Finding the door's identity

Sections are made to fit one model, so the first job is to name yours. The technician looks for the manufacturer's label, usually a sticker on the end of a section, inside the top section or on a track, and reads the model or series, the date and sometimes a colour code. Then come the measurements: overall width and height, the height of each section, its thickness, and the spacing of the hinge holes on the stiles. The panel design is noted too, whether short raised panels, long panels, flush or a carriage-house look, along with the window layout and the type of joint between sections. Photographs of the label and of the whole door go into the file.

  2. Scene 2

Fitting the new section into the door

The new section is lifted into the gap, its rollers guided into the tracks and its joint mated to the section below so the two profiles nest. Hinges go on according to the number stamped on them: each position in the door uses a different hinge offset, which places the roller progressively further from the door face so the upper sections follow the curve of the track. New self-tapping screws are driven into the stiles at the factory hole positions, a strut is bolted across if the section calls for one, and the technician confirms the section sits flat and the joint above closes tight.

  3. Scene 3

A record of the door for next time

You leave with the door's identity written down: manufacturer, model or series, section height and thickness, panel design, colour code and the position of the section that was replaced. Keep it with the house papers or photograph it and file it on your phone. The next time a section, a hinge or a set of rollers is needed, that record turns a search into a straightforward order. It also tells any future technician what has already been changed and when, which helps them judge the rest of the door's age and condition without guessing.

What shapes the quoteBridgeport Garage Door Experts

Whether the exact section is still made
A current model is a straightforward order. A discontinued design may mean a section from a related series, a custom-made section, or a discussion about the whole door, each of which lands differently on the quote.
Spring work required
A bottom section means torsion springs are unwound and rewound, or, on an extension-spring door, the door is raised and secured so the springs relax and its hooks and cables are reset instead. A section changing the door's weight may call for a balance adjustment.
Access and working room
A section is wider than the door opening and is carried in and manoeuvred by two people. A cluttered garage, a low ceiling around the spring, or a tight driveway adds handling time.

Ask us anything

What is a strut, and does a new section need one?

A strut is a horizontal steel stiffener fastened across the inside of a section to keep it from bowing. Wide doors, top sections where the opener arm pulls, and bottom sections that take knocks are the usual places for them. If your damaged section had a strut, the new one gets a straight strut refitted or replaced. If a top section bowed because it never had one, adding a strut is part of putting it right.

My door is insulated. Does the new section need the same insulation?

It should. Insulated sections come in different thicknesses and core types, and the replacement needs to match yours so the joints line up, the hinges sit at the right depth and the weight stays consistent with the springs. Mixing an insulated section into an uninsulated door, or the reverse, generally means a step at the joint and a change in balance. The technician reads the thickness and core type from the door before ordering.

Can the replacement section be a different style, as an upgrade?

Within one door, sections need to share the same joint profile, thickness and hinge spacing, so a section from a different design generally does not mate with its neighbours. What you can change is a detail the manufacturer offers for your model, such as ordering the top section with windows or adding decorative hardware. If you want a genuinely different look or insulation level, that is a conversation about a new door rather than one section.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 49 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 49% of homes in Kitchener were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.A neighbourhood with homes from several decades means a technician meets both generations of garage door in a single day: extension-spring wood doors next to steel sectionals on torsion hardware. The van carries parts for both so either kind of door is repaired on the first visit.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 48% of homes in Kitchener (2021 Census).Mixed housing brings mixed garage use: workshops and storage in the detached homes, everyday parking and a tight squeeze in the attached ones. Sealed rollers and protected sensors suit the busy workshop door; a quiet opener and a well-balanced door suit the townhouse.
